Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Exams

Two types of RAD Examinations in Classical Ballet are available to our students
(2)  Vocational Examinations in Dance

The Vocational Examinations are for students continuing on to
professional training.  Pointe work is included for girls at this
level. The Vocational Exams are scheduled by the
Royal
Academy of Dance
(RAD) and are held once per year in
February or March.

The dates for the Vocational Examinations will be announced
upon notification from the
Royal Academy of Dance (RAD).
Each student registered for the Vocational Examinations will
receive a notification letter with a
specific date and time for her
or his exam.  RAD will mail the letters to our school, and the
instructors will distribute the letters to the students.  Schedules
set by RAD are final and cannot be changed.

The Vocational Examinations venue will be held at a central
location for all Northern California students (central location to
be announced).

There is no parent observation of RAD Exams.

Getting Ready for the Exam  - Helpful Hints from RAD USA
                                                                       Mock Exams

Mock (Practice) Examinations are scheduled prior to the actual examinations to help prepare students for the exam/presentation
class experience.  Typically the Mock Exams are held two to four weeks prior to the actual exams.  All students registered for the

Royal Academy of Dance
(RAD) Examinations/Presentation Classes must attend the Mock Examinations.  Students in the same
RAD level attend Mock Exams as one group.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) about RAD Exams/Presentations

What are RAD Examinations and Presentation Classes?
The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) stresses that each student should have an achievable goal. This is measured either by an
annual
RAD Examination or a Presentation Class.

The examinations and presentation classes are conducted by RAD Examiners who travel internationally to RAD schools and
provide an objective evaluation of each student’s progress.  Students must be made to realize that from the moment they enter the
examination room to the time they leave, they are “on stage” and must act accordingly.
Observation of the examinations and
presentation classes is not permitted;
only the RAD examiner, pianist and the specific students being tested are allowed into the
studio.  We request that outside noise be kept to a minimum so that students can remain focused and the examiner can work
without distraction.

For the Pre-School and Pre-Primary levels, the RAD exams are now called "Class Awards & Presentation".

Students who do not meet the RAD Exam requirements will instead have a separate
Presentation Class to present their work to the
RAD Examiner, but they will not be graded.  Dance is a means of self expression.  It is very helpful especially with children who may
have difficulty in socializing with others or have academic problems.  RAD also has
Presentation Classes for children with special
needs
that have been well received.  The RAD recognizes the humanitarian reason to study dance as well as the artistic
development of young dancers.

Beginning with the Fall 2010 to Spring 2011 School Year, all students who have enrolled in our RAD Ballet Program and have paid
the Flat Fee by Grade Level will participate in the appropriate RAD Examination or Presentation Class. Drop-In students do not
participate in exams or presentations.  Students must attain the exam standard and attend the full number of classes per week for
their respective levels to participate in the RAD Exams.  Some students will be required to take private lessons or extra classes for
exam preparation if work is weak in that level.  All students must have consent from the Ballet Director and instructors to take the
RAD Exams.

Who decides the RAD Exam dates and the scheduled times for each student?
All exam scheduling is done by the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), not our school, and exam/presentation class dates can occur
on school days. We apologize if this necessitates your student missing school for a partial day or full day.

When do students register for the RAD Exams/Presentation Classes?
A portion of the Flat Fee by Grade Level paid at the time a student enrolls for the Fall/Spring School year is used to register the
student for the appropriate RAD Examination or Presentation Class.  RAD requires that registration for RAD Examinations and
Presentation Classes be done in September in order to allow enough time for processing in London. The RAD processing has
changed and it now takes longer than in years past.  We can no longer do last minute registrations.

Are regular Grade classes held during RAD Exam and Mock Exam times?
No, however Vocational classes may be held.  Schedule changes will be announced prior to the Mock Exams and RAD Exams.
Please refer to our "Classes, Tuition & Policy Information" regarding no classes during the exams.

Classes will not be held for approximately three (3) days during Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Graded Exams/Presentation
Classes (typically held in March or April) and for approximately four (4) days during Mock Graded Exams (typically held in February or
March).  Actual dates will be announced upon notification from RAD.  Make-up classes will be arranged for Contemporary, Adult
Ballet, and Jazz students affected by the exam schedule and for students who are not participating in the RAD Exams/Presentations.

Are students guaranteed to pass the RAD Exam?  Does the RAD Exam score indicate how well a
student is doing in the class?
RAD Exam Results are one of the following:  Fail, Pass, Merit, Distinction.  Attending the required number of classes per week does
not guarantee that students will pass the Graded or Vocational RAD Exams.  Vocational examinations are difficult and become even
more so with each level.  Some vocational students should be satisfied with a “pass” score and not worry about receiving a
“distinction.”

Our instructors are responsible for students knowing the syllabus work by a certain deadline, and for helping each student achieve
the highest RAD Exam score based on their individual potential.  Often times, students do not understand why the instructors ask
them to do the same exercises over and over.  Knowing the basic movement itself is not enough; repetition brings about subtle
changes to refine their movement.

The new Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate syllabi are more challenging.  I therefore recommend that vocational students
schedule at least one private lesson a month so as to gain a better understanding of presentation, style and musical awareness,
the latter being more complex.  Since all bodies are different, more specialized coaching may be needed so that the students fully
understand their own capabilities.

RAD exams provide a standard, but they should not be considered the only measure of success which is relative to each child.

Parents should not judge students solely upon their RAD exam score as to how well they are doing in class.  For example, a
student may not have felt well the day of the exam or had some other issues on exam day.  More often what we see is that some
students just need more time for their bodies to develop and mature.  Periodic growth spurts or weight gain during the middle
school years can be especially frustrating for students as they struggle to maintain their current skills while adjusting to their
growing bodies.  Sometimes those who are slow to develop actually become the stronger dancers.

Also, the RAD exams are meant to provide a structured approach to dance, where one level builds upon another.  The exams give
students a goal to work towards and added motivation while providing a standard that is universal.  Exam scores also provide a
basis for objectively filling roles in our school productions; RAD exam results are not the only criteria used, as instructor
recommendations are also considered along with the commitment of both the student and family.

Exam scores reflect a performance on a given day.  There are many beautiful dancers who have not done well on exams for a
number of reasons.  Unfortunately, ballet technique requires a specific body type to achieve a professional standard.  If a student is
not blessed with this body type, she/he is not able to physically perform some of the movements to that standard.  The goal at our
school is to develop a love and enjoyment of this beautiful art form and to bring out the best in each child regardless of body type
and ability.  To discourage a child from continuing because their scores are not high is to truly defeat the purpose of the school,
which is to nurture the individual as a person first.  Very few go on to become professional dancers, but they come away with a body
that improves with respect to strength, coordination and balance.  They develop self-discipline which benefits them in college and
later in the work place.  For many, it builds self-esteem and develops a love for the arts that will last a life time and contribute to
many enjoyable hours at the theater.

When do we receive the results of the RAD Exams?
For Presentation Classes, Pre-School levels and Pre-Primary levels, presentation certificates are given to these students the day of
the presentation by the RAD examiner.

For Primary through Vocational levels, it normally takes about two months before we receive the results of the RAD Exams. The RAD
examiner's evaluations are sent to London for review before they are released.  Students who pass their exams will receive a RAD
Exam Certificate along with their test score sheets.  Graded Exam scores generally arrive in late June.  Vocational Exam scores
generally arrive in late May.

(1)  Graded Examinations in Dance

The Graded Examinations are for students in Pre-School,
Pre-Primary, Primary, and Grade 1 through Grade 8 classes.
The Graded Exams are scheduled by the
Royal Academy of
Dance
(RAD) and are held once per year in March or April.

For the Pre-School and Pre-Primary levels,  the exam is
now called
"Class Awards & Presentation".

We have requested that the exams be held on Saturday and
Sunday, but if the RAD cannot accommodate our request,
then the exams will be held during the week with the first
exams beginning at 2:00 pm each day.  Schedules set by
RAD are final and cannot be changed.

Approximately one month prior to the Graded Exams,
each
student
will be notified by email of the exact exam date and
time assigned by RAD.  The exam schedule will also be
posted in the studio lobby.

The Graded Examinations are usually held at
Rachel’s Ballet
Mission Valley studio (MV - our second studio) at Las

Presentation Rehearsals with Pianist

TWO CHANGES THIS YEAR:
(1)  To help our students prepare for this year's RAD exams,
we will have "presentation rehearsals with our pianist".
These presentation rehearsals are less formal than mock
exams, but will still give our students an opportunity to
demonstrate what they have learned.

(2) There is a new RAD syllabus for the first vocational level,
Intermediate Foundation (IF).  Typically our Grade 6, and
sometimes Grade 5, students also take the vocational
Intermediate Foundation exam.  RAD is allowing us to have
our vocational Intermediate Foundation (IF) exams during
the same time as the Graded exams.

Schedules will be emailed to parents and posted in studio
lobbies.

Students who are not participating in the RAD exams
program, please attend another class as a make-up of any
cancelled classes due to the presentation rehearsals.
Please check the
News page for details of any replacement
make-up dates.  Solo, Ensemble & private lessons are also
impacted so please
check your email and the News page.

NOTE:  The Presentation Rehearsals will be accompanied
by live piano music.  Parents will be invited to observe
only
on
*specified dates and may use non-flash cameras and
video recorders
.  This will be an opportunity to see how
much each student has progressed.

Please remember:  Students should wear clean uniforms
and style hair neatly away from the face (up in a bun for
females).  Please bring clean skirts, ballet slippers,
character shoes, pointe shoes & demi-pointe shoes (IF
level only), and a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
