RAD
Exams

General Information
- Annual
Royal Academy of Dance
Examinations in Classical Ballet are optional, though recommended. If examination is to be attempted in the
Spring, the student must have good attendance and achieved the exam
standard. Participating students
must have consent from the Ballet Director and teachers
- The
exams are conducted by RAD Examiners who travel internationally to RAD
schools and provide an objective evaluation of each student’s
progress. Students must be made to
realize that from the moment they enter the examination room, to the time
they leave, they are “on stage” and must act accordingly
- All
exam scheduling is done by the RAD, not our studio, and exam dates can
occur on school days. We have requested that the exams
be held on Saturday and Sunday but if that request cannot be honored, then
the exams will be held during the week with the first exams beginning at
2:00 pm each day. We apologize
if this necessitates your student missing school for a partial day
- The studio will be closed (no
regular classes are held) for two days during the RAD Graded
Examinations. Actual dates will be
announced upon notification from RAD.
- Two
types of RAD exams in Classical Ballet are available to our students:
1.
Graded Examinations in Dance
The Graded Examinations
are for students in Pre-Primary, Primary, and Grade 1 through Grade 8
classes. The exams are scheduled by the Royal Academy of Dance and are held once
a year in the Spring. Approximately one
month prior to the exams, each student will receive a form with the exact exam
date and time assigned by RAD. The
Graded Examinations will be held at Rachel’s
Ballet studio
2.
Vocational Examinations in Dance
The Vocational Examinations are for
students continuing on to professional training. Pointe work is included for girls at this
level. The dates for the Vocational
Examinations will be announced upon notification from RAD. In the past, the exams
have been in March. Each student
registered for the Vocational Examinations will receive a notification letter
with a specific date and time for her or his exam. The Vocational Examinations venue will be
held at a central location for all Northern California
students
- Mock (Practice) Examinations are
scheduled generally one to two weeks before the actual examinations to
help prepare students for the exam experience. All students registered for the RAD
Examinations must attend the Mock Examinations. For the Graded Examinations, a schedule will be posted in the lobby
with each grade level’s date and time for the Mock Graded Examination
which will be held at Rachel’s
Ballet studio. Vocational students will be notified of
the specific date, time and central
location for their Vocational
Exam and Mock Vocational Exam
- Costs associated with taking
the RAD exam include exam registration fees and pianist fees. Registration fees vary depending upon
the class level of the student and pianist fees vary depending upon the
number of students participating
